10 Unique Dropshipping Products to Sell in 2018

If you’re a budding entrepreneur who is looking to start their own ecommerce store in 2018, we’ve got good news for you – there are many great products that you can sell online.

However, deciding on the products which will bring your store success is no easy task, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed during the selection process.

This is especially true if you’re running your business with the dropshipping business model, as you won’t need to worry about managing physical inventory, and you can easily add or remove products from your store with just a few clicks.

Our advice? Find products which make your store stand out from the crowd.

But, how do you find those products?

Make no mistakes, finding a winning product is not easy, but we’re here to help. We’ve created this article to show you our list of the top 10 popular products to sell online in 2018.

We’ve used research from a multitude of sources, and our own ecommerce experience to curate this list, and you can use it as inspiration for your own inventory, or emulate it directly – whichever makes the most sense for your business.

In this article we’ll also cover dropshipping as a business model, and give you some marketing advice that’ll help you to drive traffic to your store if you decide to sell similar products.

Also, we’ll highlight Verified Suppliers – what they are, and why you should take note of them when you’re looking for popular products to sell online.

There’s a lot to cover, so let’s get started!

What is Dropshipping and Why Should You Dropship?

At this point, you might be asking: “what is dropshipping?”

In short, it’s a business model that you can use to run your online store without ever managing any inventory.

This makes it quite different from a traditional ecommerce store.

The typical process for selling products online will first involve you sourcing your inventory, then you’ll need to figure out where you’ll store your products, and then you’ll need to take care of the shipping and handling yourself when you receive an order.

However, if you decide to run your business using the dropshipping business model, you’ll never need to worry about that side of running a business.

Instead, you’ll only need to add products to your online store, and when you receive an order from a customer, your supplier will then ship the said product directly from their warehouse to your customer’s door.

Also, you can change your inventory whenever you want. If you want to add new products or remove underperforming ones, you can do so with just a few clicks. This allows you to experiment with your inventory until you land on a list of products which your audience will love.

Unlike a traditional ecommerce store, you’ll never need to worry about purchasing products in bulk, which might not even sell. You can also run your dropshipping business from anywhere in the world – all you need is an internet connection and a computer.

If you’re interested in learning more about the dropshipping business model, check out our in-depth guide – we cover this topic in much more detail. You can also read our FAQs too.

Choosing Unique Dropshipping Products to Sell

Now that we’ve explained how dropshipping works as a business model, it’s time to dive into our list of unique dropshipping products that are perfect to sell in 2018.

As we mentioned earlier, we curated this list using data from a variety of sources, and every product on this list fits our criteria for a popular product to dropship online.

Wondering what our criteria is? From our experience, we’ve found that a great dropshipping product is:

  • Hard to find elsewhere online
  • Hard to guess the price
  • Interesting and entices the buyer to click
  • Bought without much research
  • Not too expensive

Also, we recommend using Facebook advertising to promote these products, which is why we’ve included some advice on targeting to give you that extra boost towards success.

And one last thing before we get started with our list – the suppliers that you choose are important.

After all, the greatest product in the world can do nothing for your business if your supplier lets you down.

Which is exactly why we recommend using Verified Suppliers from KartSupply – you’ll never need to worry about finding exceptional suppliers, because we’ve already done it for you.

Okay, now that we’ve covered that, let’s kick off our list!

Moon Lamps

Moon lamps kick off our list of unique dropshipping products, and with good reason too – they’re sure to make your store stand out from the crowd.

Finding unique products, like moon lamps, is essential if you’re looking to break into the homeware niche, as there are already plenty of established brands which your audience are familiar with.

However, that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible.

If you can offer your audience popular products which are appealing, that they haven’t already seen before, they’ll be sure to consider purchasing those products from your store. After all, they won’t know where else to purchase them from.

This is exactly why moon lamps made our list of unique dropshipping products to sell in 2018 – they’re relatively unknown right now, but we expect them to explode in popularity in the future.

Targeting Tips:

World Map Watches

If you’ve read our blog in the past, you may have noticed that we’ve already mentioned watches in our list of the best dropshipping products to sell in fall, and we’re sure that this new variant will continue to excel.

Watches are a popular and classic product to sell online, and these world map watches offer a new, modern twist, making them a welcome addition to any ecommerce store selling fashion accessories.

They’re trendy, unisex, and it’s likely that your audience won’t have seen them before, making them a perfect product for dropshipping.

Targeting Tips:

Gold-Plated Flowers

The act of giving flowers to a loved one is a classic romantic gesture, and it’s a great way to show somebody how much you cherish them. But, unfortunately, those flowers will eventually wilt.

Instead of giving them a gift which has a relatively short lifetime, you could offer that special somebody a gift which will last – like a gold-plated flower. They’re perfect for Valentine’s day!

We’ve added these products to our list of unique dropshipping products to sell in 2018 as we’ve already seen numerous KartSupply merchants find great success by selling these sought-after popular products online.

We’re sure that you can also find success by adding them to your inventory list, and promoting them to your audience with some well-thought marketing campaigns.

Use the targeting advice below and get ahead of the game – these popular products could be a game changer for your store.

Targeting Tips:

Dog Water Bottles

Buyers who are passionate about their pets generally like to pamper them with new, interesting products. This notion makes them an extremely valuable audience for ecommerce entrepreneurs, just like you.

However, savvy entrepreneurs have already figured out the value in pet owners, so it can be quite difficult to break into the pet industry, unless you have a unique product that your audience hasn’t seen before.

With this in mind, we’ve added specialized dog water bottles to our list of unique dropshipping products to sell in 2018. These products are a great idea for dog walkers throughout the year, and they’re also relatively unknown in the pet industry, making them perfect for dropshippers.

We’re sure that you can succeed by selling these popular products if you can pair them with some clever, data-driven marketing campaigns.

Targeting Tips:

Elephant Pillows

If you’re an entrepreneur who is looking to bolster their inventory with products that are perfect for children, we highly recommend elephant pillows. These unique products are perfect for dropshippers – they have a fairly low price point, they’re hard to find elsewhere, and they’re often bought without much research done prior.

However, the thing that stands out most with these products is their margins, and the ability to generate a large sum of profit for every sale that you make.

As these products are relatively cheap to source, you can mark them up considerably when you’re adding them to your store. This also means that you’ll be able to generate more money which you can reinvest into marketing campaigns for your products.

Targeting Tips:

Multifunctional Water Bottles

You may have noticed that we’ve already included one specialized water bottle on our list of unique dropshipping products to sell in 2018, but we’ve got another great product that we’re sure dropshippers can find success with.

So, why did we add another type of water bottle to our list?

We’ve seen many KartSupply merchants sell multifunctional water bottles recently, just like the one shown about, which has a built-in compartment for pills or supplements.

These products are relatively cheap to source, light (which makes them suitable for ePacket delivery), and they have a very specific audience, which makes them great for targeting marketing campaigns.

Don’t forget to check our targeting advice for Facebook adverts below!

Targeting Tips

Animal Rings

Generally, jewelry and women’s accessories are popular products to sell online for dropshippers.

However, it’s a fiercely competitive market to try and break into, so it’s essential that you’re armed with unique products for your store.

This is exactly why we’ve added these animal rings to our list of unique dropshipping products to sell in 2018.

These adorable rings are perfect for dropshippers who are looking for products that will help them to stand out from the crowd. They’re relatively cheap to source, and they’re often bought without too much research from your customers.

To take a step to the next level, we recommend creating bundles with these products, and offering a discount to your customers when they buy multiple rings – this will help you to generate more revenue overall, which you can then reinvest into drawing in more customers.

Targeting Tips:

Puzzle Mugs

These products are brand new, and we’ve already noticed that the few entrepreneurs who have added them to their store are finding success.

But, why do we think these products are so great?

Puzzle mugs offer a niche alternative to a product which is already present in the homes and offices are buyers everywhere. As such, entrepreneurs like yourself can target your marketing campaigns to your audience with laser precision.

Remember – it’s all about putting the right product in front of the right people.

Targeting Tips:

Choker Necklaces

Choker necklaces have been a hot product for dropshippers for a while now, and we’re certain that their popularity will continue in 2018.

If you’re interested in getting started with a dropshipping store that sells women’s fashion products, or you’re looking to bolster your existing inventory, these products will be one of the best to sell for the next year.

They’re available in a wide range of styles, materials, and colors, so you’re certain to find products that will match your brand’s style.

Targeting Tips:

Arrow Bracelets

Last on our list of the best unique drop shipping products for 2018 are these minimalist arrow bracelets.

Jewelry can certainly be a difficult niche to tackle. However, we’re sure that you can succeed if you sell products which fit this minimalist style. We’ve seen these products grow in popularity over the past few years, and they show no sign of slowing down.

These bracelets are sleek, stylish, and made from premium materials, making them a must-have gift for women of all backgrounds, and a perfect product for your ecommerce store.

You can also dropship drones with cameras that can be used to monitor crops, record aerial shots for weddings or commercial projects. With this type of niche market, you’ll want to ensure you choose higher-end drones, which will likely cost more money, as your demographic cares about video and image quality

However, if you create video content around your brand, you can likely succeed with Facebook Ads as well.

Mirrorless cameras are more lightweight and compact than DSLRs which make them ideal for photographers who don’t want to lug around bulky inventory. If you decide to do this, you need to make sure you blur out faces and license plates. You’ll also want to have permission from the person who recorded the video to share it. Wireless earphones is a startup business idea growing in popularity due to the advancement in technology such as Bluetooth and wifi. However, there’s also a convenience component to them. You can dropship wireless earphones from AliExpress, with many suppliers offering free ePacket shipping making it affordable for consumers. When building a brand, you’ll want to create articles about wireless earphones and different target audiences who’d use them. You also want to showcase the convenience of having them. #8: Beard Oil – Niche Examples

One of the most popular niche examples targeting men is beard oil as the grooming industry makes approximately $6 billion in annual sales. By 2022, the power bank industry is expected to climb to $25.16 billion USD. A power bank is a mobile charger which is charged in advance for a later use. It’s a great product for those who plan to be in a remote location with limited access to electrical outlets. With an astounding 80% of internet users owning a mobile device, accessories like power banks are expected to continue growing in popularity. So, this startup idea might just be the perfect opportunity for you to make money in the power bank industry.

You can also expand into other popular mobile accessories niches such as phone cases. Having a store focused on mobile electronics that are growing in popularity can prove to be one of the most profitable ecommerce business ideas.

#11: Mesh Dress – Business Startup Ideas

Fashion trends are constantly changing. However, over the past couple years, we’ve noticed that mesh dresses have kept their trending product status. If you’ve been daydreaming about fashion business ideas, you’ll want to include a few mesh dressproducts within this category onto your store. It makes the most sense as a product collection on a broader women’s fashion store. You also don’t need to limit yourself to dresses. You’ll be able to find mesh tops and mesh lingerie as well. It’s one of those trending business ideas, you’ll wish you jumped on early if you’re a fashion retailer.

Women are the target audience for this business idea.

Mesh apparel is most popular among 18-34 year old women. Facebook ads will likely be the best way to market your brand. If the product images aren’t attractive enough, you can ask influencers to model your apparel and use those lifestyle shots for your ads to ensure the highest level of engagement. You can also do influencer marketing. However, influencer marketing in fashion can lead to zero conversions if you partner with influencers who don’t share the same audience as you. You can also reach out to fashion bloggers to take quality images and give you a shoutout on their website.

#12: Enamel Pins – Business Startup Ideas

Enamel pins, one the most popular ecommerce business ideas, have been exploding in popularity over the past two years with no signs of slowing down. This new business idea is showing no signs of slowing down. From popular emojis to food, you can find an enamel pin that suits your customers’ diverse interests. They allow your customers to express themselves with unique fashion art they can easily clip onto an outfit. By offering a quirky or relatable selection of enamel pins to your customer, you’ll be better able to monetize your store. You can also expand into other relevant niche categories such as accessories like sunglasses, shoes, jackets, and more. Keep your brand name generic like ban.do to allow you to grow into other categories as your brand explodes in popularity.

You can easily dropship enamel pins using KartSupply’s app. As enamel pins are visually appealing, Instagram tends to work best when marketing these types of products. You can also post your enamel pins on colorful backgrounds, lay them out in a patterned design and show them worn by your customers to build up your social media following. Use several hashtags to find new customers and grow your followers.

#13: Men’s Backpacks/Drawstring Bag/Women’s Handbags/Women’s Backpacks – Niche Examples

The backpack niche has been steadily growing over the years making it one of the best startup business ideas. Backpacks are no longer just for students. Employees carrying laptops to and from work and travellers use backpacks regularly. You’ll notice a trend increase within men’s backpacks, drawstring bag, women’s handbags, women’s backpacks and more. The backpack niche is a viable business startup idea since there’s a diverse selection of bags that have been growing in popularity. You can eventually expand into luggage which has also been growing in recent years.

Instagram and Facebook would likely work well for your backpack brand. You’ll want to start marketing in July or August to capitalize on back to school sales. Keep in mind that children’s backpacks have been decreasing in popularity so targeting students attending college would likely work best. You can do some Instagram marketing where you have college-aged influencers wearing and promoting your backpack.  Offer influencers a commission for every referral through their link to keep your costs low while ensuring sales. Be sure to also target people by their university and age to find your audience on Facebook.

#14: Cateye Sunglasses – Business Startup Ideas

If you’re looking to launch a startup business, the cateye sunglasses niche might be perfect for you. The niche tends to have steady and reliable growth but has seen an uptick in popularity recently making it a trend worth jumping onto. Over 3.5 billion sunglasses are sold each year globally. While your online store doesn’t have to sell exclusively cateye sunglasses, you should put an emphasis on those products. You can eventually expand into other product categories like watches, scarves, and seasonal accessories to capitalize on year round sales.

When marketing cateye sunglasses, you’ll likely want to tap into Instagram influencer marketing. You can offer influencers a commission for selling your sunglasses so that you only pay a fee for the products they sold rather than a post on their page. You’ll also want to try Facebook ads likely targeting fans of other sunglasses brands. Partnering with a relevant brand can also help you grow your sales such as a sunscreen or beach accessories brand. You can also reach out to publications such as women’s magazines and offer them a free sample to be included on their website or magazine.

#15: Workwear – Ecommerce Business Ideas

Workwear is one of those good business ideas that you can take in a number of directions. There’s the work safety niche which has specialized workwear such as safety shoes, scrubs, eye protection and more. Or you can go into the business man’s workwear and sell suits, ties, dress shoes and other men’s fashion. There’s also women’s workwear where you can sell professional clothing for women such as conservative dresses, blazers, blouses and more. It doesn’t make sense to combine all of these niches since they all serve different audiences. However, within each of these business ideas there’s a lot of room to expand into other verticals.

Marketing your workwear brand depends on which audience you serve. For example, if you sell specialized workwear, you’ll likely be targeting people who work in the trades such as construction or nursing. You’d be selling products like safety shoes and scrubs. However, even within that niche you’d find that you can’t do a one size fits all ad. The person who’d buy safety shoes is very different than a nurse looking for scrubs. Within the men’s workwear niche, it’s considered more of a men’s fashion store. You’d target men between 25-40 with your apparel. You might choose to target men of different industries depending on what type of workwear you sell. For example, if you sell suits you might choose to target those who work in finance or law. In the women’s workwear niche, you’d likely market to women aged 23-34. If you sell professional work apparel, you might choose to target women who work in business, public relations, law, administration, or within a government role. As you can see, this is a business idea that can be taken into many different directions, depending on which niche you aim to focus on.

#16: Women’s Pumps – Business Ideas

The women’s pumps niche has been steadily increasing making it one of the most stable ecommerce business ideas. This startup idea is not a new one, and has been popular for several years making it one of the best long-term business ideas. In spring 2016, over 84 million people had bought women’s shoes within the past 12 months. Over 34% of affluent households spent $250 or more on women’s shoes in 2016. It’s safe to assume that women are either buying expensive shoes or buying higher quantities of them. Either way, this will help ensure your business stays profitable within your niche. The great thing about this startup business idea is that you don’t need to only sell women’s pumps but can expand into other footwear and accessories like socks, scarves and other seasonal products.
To monetize your women’s pumps brand, you can market your store on Instagram. You can use shoe brands like Katy Perry Collections as inspiration for how to create graphics, or to get ideas about what types of pictures and videos to add to your page. You can also use influencers to promote your brand for you to their audiences offering a commission for each sale they bring in. Facebook ads can also work well for your shoe brand depending on how you brand your store. Lifestyle shots like Payless ShoeSource and shoes on colored backgrounds can capture attention better than an ad with a pair of shoes on a plain white background.

#17: Lace Bras – Startup Ideas

The lace bra niche has been steady for years but in recent months is starting to see some growth. This business idea is one that is likely to continue to climb. The lingerie industry has increasing sales making $82.1 billion in revenue in 2016. Your lace bra store can also include other types of bras, lingerie, panties, and women’s accessories to ensure strong profits. Bras are the most popular lingerie that people buy making up over 55% of sales within the industry.
Marketing a lace bra on your online store will require you to use your creativity. Ads with nudity usually get shut down on Facebook ads. You’ll need to use images of your lace bras on vibrant colored backgrounds and styled in fun ways for your ad to be accepted and gain traction. You might want to model your Facebook marketing after brands like La Senza and Victoria’s Secret.

#18: Compression Socks – Startup Business Ideas

Compression socks add pressure to your lower legs to help reduce discomfort, swelling and more. They’re often worn by people who suffer from disorders like edema, thrombosis and more. While they can be tight, they often help improve the blood flow in your legs. If selling compression socks on your store, you need to be mindful of the language you use. This niche is one of the trickiest business ideas as you don’t want to make any claims about medical improvements. For example, you should use phrases like ‘helps reduce swelling’ rather than just ‘reduce swelling’ as the latter could be considered a claim. These socks work well on a medical related store that sells scrubs and medical gloves. You could also sell compression socks on a store that sells comfortable shoes like runners or orthopedic shoes.

Compression socks are a search-based product. Ultimately, you need to make sure that your product category and product pages are search engine optimized to effectively market these products. If you’re intent on using Facebook ads, then you should consider using a combination of organic traffic through search and retargeting ads. This will help better convert your traffic if they’ve abandoned their cart or weren’t ready to buy the first time around. You could also create ads for relevant segments such as athletes or those with certain illness that would require compression socks.

#19: Plus Size Clothing – Business Startup Ideas

Plus Size Clothing is one of the top business ideas of 2018. Last year, we saw more callouts for inclusion and diversity. More retailers are expanding their store collections to include clothing that fits every body. Since more manufacturers are offering greater size collections, there’s also more variety in clothing styles. Plus size clothing, as a standalone niche, allows you to fine tune your marketing directly to the plus sized audience. It allows women to shop on a website without worrying about finding the right size. You could expand to this business idea and also add plus sized clothing to your fashion store. However, avoid creating categories called ‘Plus Sized Clothing.’ For example, retailer Suzy Shier calls their collection ‘Curve Appeal’ while their URL is optimized with the keywords ‘plus sizes’.

Plus sized clothing can be marketed in countless ways. You can go the organic traffic route and optimize your website for keywords like ‘plus size dresses’ or ‘plus sized clothing.’ As a fashion business idea, you can also successfully market on Facebook or Instagram. While you can include product posts on Facebook, you can also add a viral element to your posts which can help skyrocket your page’s engagement and following. You can add body positive images, inspiration articles, and viral videos about loving yourself no matter what. This viral approach has worked well for me while working within the fitness niche. Videos, especially, help skyrocket your pages engagement over time. You’ll want to have Facebook ads running at the same time which will naturally help boost overall engagement as well.

#20: Bodysuit – Ecommerce Business Ideas

Bodysuits used to be worn as lingerie but have made their way into mainstream fashion. Nowadays, women wear body suits as tops. You’ll find a range of sexy bodysuits which are great for a night out or as lingerie. However, you can also find a selection of everyday wear bodysuits. Despite their growing popularity, peak season tends to be around Halloween.
You can dropship bodysuits on AliExpress for your online fashion store. If you want to find everyday bodysuits, you’ll need to search for bodysuit fashion where you’ll find a diverse collection. As a fashion outfit, you’ll likely want to make bodysuits a collection in your store to capitalize on the trend. While you can create a store that exclusively sells bodysuits, you’ll want to keep the brand name generic so that you can eventually expand into other product categories within fashion as your brand grows in popularity. You can use Forever 21 for inspiration for your bodysuit brand.

#21: Bamboo Toothbrush – New Business Ideas

If you’re looking for new business ideas, the bamboo toothbrush niche is at an all-time high. It’s been maintaining high search volume for a few months now showing that this is one trend you need to jump on right now. Bamboo toothbrushes have risen in popularity due to growing interest in reducing plastic. Toothbrushes are replaced every couple of months resulting in higher plastic waste which doesn’t biodegrade. Bamboo toothbrushes allow your customers to be more eco-friendly. There are many different directions in which you can take this business idea. Some have chosen to create a standalone bamboo toothbrush store. However, you can also create a general bamboo store. Or you can add these trending products to a teeth whitening products store.

Bamboo toothbrushes can be marketed via Facebook ads and organic search. Facebook ads can be used to retarget your organic traffic but you can also use it to get immediate sales. Organic search is a long-term play but can also lower your acquisition costs. You should also consider bundling your products to increase average order value. Simply selling multiple bamboo toothbrushes of the same style can prove to be profitable for your store. Plus, it ensures that the customer is constantly using your toothbrush brand.

#22 Kawaii Plush – Small Business Ideas

There has been a surge in Japanese-themed stores. You can sell kawaii plush, products or even Japanese snacks. Kawaii is the Japanese word for cute. Essentially, a kawaii plush store is a small business idea that involves selling cute plush. There’s a specific look for these types of products and not all cute products are considered kawaii. For example, Hello Kitty is a popular example for this product style. But remember not to sell trademarked products without a license. If you search kawaii on AliExpress, you’ll find a range of products such as plush, notebooks, pens and other stationery products that could potentially sell well.

There’s definitely a market for these types of small business ideas. You can target people who have an interest in kawaii, Japan, anime, or other relevant keywords. On average, Asian women tend to be the target audience for kawaii products. However, you don’t need to limit yourself to Asian countries. You can target people who speak Asian languages, or are interested in the Asian culture that live in Canada or the United States.

#23 Hair Removal Tools – Top Business Ideas

Hair removal tools are frequently used by women to remove body hair. With this top business idea, you can sell laser hair removal tools, facial threading tools, shavers, wax warmers and other related products. Hair removal tools can be created as its own store or you can add it as a subcategory on a beauty store. The beauty of marketing a business idea like this one is that you can get repeat sales since consumers will likely buy multiple shavers or threading tools. And for laser hair removal products you can have a high profit margin even if its still below market value.

Hair removal tools are best marketed with a search engine optimization approach. Niches that can be considered embarrassing such as hair removal typically don’t do well with Facebook ads and retargeting ads can make people feel uncomfortable. Typically, people searching for these products will look them up online and buy the product as they need it. However, if you’re selling other beauty products, you can feature hair removal tools within the email.

#24 Baby Rompers – Good Business Ideas

Baby rompers are a good business idea as they’ve proven to show strong search volume. If you want to start an online store in the baby niche, you can add these trending products within a category. However, you aren’t limited to the baby niche, you can also sell maternity products, baby toys, or children’s clothing, to add more variety to your online store making it a one stop shop for new parents. Something to take note of, a lot more parents are giving their children gender neutral names so having a category of gender neutral clothing could likely serve as a category of its own.

Women tend to be the main consumers of baby rompers. While the mother will often buy her baby’s clothes, baby rompers are also purchased by other relatives like aunts, grandmothers and other family and friends. If you decide to sell baby rompers on your store, you might choose to add a gift registry app which can help boost average order value. The gift registry won’t market itself. However, you can create an ad for expectant mothers and have them create a registry on your store so that their close friends and family buy items from your website. This helps simplify the marketing as the focus is on getting the mother to promote your store for you for her baby shower.

#25 Video Doorbells – Trending Business Ideas

Video doorbells have been growing in popularity making it one of the most popular trending business ideas. With the rise of people screening phone calls, it makes sense that people would also want to screen who shows up at their door. It could also be positioned as a security device. This new business idea could be added as an individual product on an security, trending products, or electronics online store.

When it comes to marketing video doorbells, I’d actually recommend a different layout than the traditional ecommerce store. These type of trending products tend to perform really well with long-form product copy. Instead of a traditional ecommerce layout, you should consider emulating the digital product landing page, especially if marketing video doorbells as a security product. This product could do well on a standard layout but conversions can drastically increase with a more detailed landing page. For example, check out BeachBody’s landing pages for inspiration.

#26 Fake Flowers – New Business Ideas

From floral arrangements to wedding decor, fake flowers can be used at home or for special events. In the wedding industry, they’re a new business idea as more brides are opting for artificial flowers to save costs. They can be sold to customers looking to liven up their home or to businesses who want to sell custom floral arrangements to their customers. Since they’re artificial, you won’t need to worry about flowers that die too soon making the shipping process easier for customers. If you’re looking to go after the wedding market, your best bet is to sell silk flowers which have a more realistic appearance to ensure an elegant look.

Fake flowers can be marketed in a number of ways. You can promote them on Pinterest since the wedding niche is massive on the platform making it a great audience to tap into. You’ll need to create infographic wedding pins or blog posts that can drive traffic back to your website. The secret of monetization here is to have a Facebook retargeting ad running at all times to turn blog visitors into customers. Since not all blog readers will know you have products, it’s always a good idea to retarget them after they’ve left your site. Organic traffic will also be huge if you focus on ranking for keywords related to fake flowers or artificial flowers. For this startup idea check out Afloral.com for inspiration.

#27 Throw Pillows –  Trending Products

A couple months ago Bloomberg featured an article stating that millennials are finally moving out and buying homes. As a result, they’re starting to buy more furniture and home decor than ever before. While we’re giving a shout-out to throw pillows, there’s also been an increase in other home related products such as kitchen supplies. That’s why it’s a great idea to capitalize on this new business idea to make money. Having a store related to home decor or home related products can prove to be profitable for you. You can add a wide range of home related products to your store to fill out your product collections.

When marketing throw pillows you can target two types of audiences. First, you can target female homeowners 30-55. If you sell home decor, you can run ads to different types of products to determine which performs best for that audience. Second, you can target couples in a relationship or newly engaged as they’ll likely have wedding registries or be close to buying a home making them the perfect audience to buying higher quantities of products from your store. You can even add a gift registry app on your store to get people to register for gifts on your website.

#28 Night Vision Cameras – New Business Ideas

Night vision cameras are a new business idea that tend to be popular in the security industry. Since it allows you to clearly see video footage taken at night, it can help prevent crime or catch suspects. Night vision cameras work well on security or electronics stores. They can warrant higher product costs allowing you to benefit from higher margins should you price your products at market value.

Night vision cameras are search based products. However, if you create video content on the importance of security, you could capitalize on the impulse buy market as well. On average, a search engine strategy works best as people will take initiative to search for products to buy. Ranking for long-tail keywords within the security industry gives you the best chance of success. Due to the type of product this is, you’ll want to ensure you have detailed product copy that focuses on the security benefits of having this type of camera.

#29 Air Sofa Beds – Startup Ideas

At KartSupply, we’ve seen a rise in air sofa bed sales. They can be used for lounging in a kid’s room or used outdoors for a camping trip. As a popular business idea, they work well alongside other products in an outdoor or home store. This startup idea has been trending upwards for a while now with slight peaks in the summer. Thus, giving you the perfect amount of time to start working on optimizing your online store for keywords.

Air sofa beds can perform well in search. You can optimize your content to rank for keywords related to air sofas or inflatable sofas or even inflatable beds. However, they can also perform well as an impulse buy product in the summer. You can create video content showing people lounging by a campfire or relaxing under the sun. Using those videos for your ads can prove to be profitable by encouraging people to buy your products by highlighting the experience you create around your business idea.

#30 Elephant Decor – Popular Business Ideas

A popular business idea is elephant decor. It’s been trending upwards ever since we saw the rise of yoga blankets. Elephant decor can include tapestries, figurines, pillows, and more. In some cultures, when children move out for the first time, the parents buy an elephant figurine for their home to give them good luck and protection. They’re also used in feng shui.

When marketing your elephant decor, you’ll want to mention the good luck aspect in your copy, especially if the elephant’s trunk is up. When creating ads, you can market to people who are recently engaged or married as elephant decor in the bedroom is believed to increase fertility in some cultures. You don’t want to make any claims in your copy so be sure to use language like ‘believed to’ or ‘may help.’

What Is ePacket Delivery?

ePacket delivery is one of the most popular shipping methods. It is offered by merchants from China and Hong Kong and is one of the fastest delivery methods that allows you to ship internationally. You can use China Post to monitor your ePacket tracking numbers for your customers.

Formerly, products purchased from China were shipped by sea. This meant delivery could take 8+ weeks. This also meant that your customers had to wait longer to receive their products. Or, you’d have to purchase the product at a higher price from a US based supplier which can eat into your profit margins.

Fortunately, ePacket tracking shows that most orders come within 30 days. When you check your ePacket tracking data, it’s likely that you’ll notice many packages arrive sooner. There are several considerations to make regarding using ePacket delivery. For example: ePacket regulations, the location of your customer base, and how to track ePacket deliveries. This guide will cover these topics and more.

What Is ePacket Delivery?

ePacket delivery is an agreement between the US Postal Service (USPS) and Hongkong Post. The goal is to increase international ecommerce sales for China. It allows for faster ePacket delivery of products coming from China and Hong Kong to a number of different countries. Merchants can send small packages weighing up to 2 kg (4.4 lbs).

The value of the package also needs to be less than $400.

What are the Benefits of Using ePacket?

As the name “ePacket” suggests, the shipping service was formed for ecommerce purposes, in order to make it faster and more affordable for customers to receive their purchases from online stores and marketplaces that shipped from China and Hong Kong.

ePacket became so successful within the US that they began expanding internationally. The list of countries that have access to ePacket is constantly growing.

Prior to the introduction of ePacket, the China EMS was the alternative that was relied on for affordable delivery of customer products. The downside of this however was that it would often take more than a month for the customers to receive their orders. Any other alternative option available was far too expensive, especially considering the price of the product.

Alongside cost and time efficiency, ePacket offers a variety of other benefits to buyers, including:

  • Door-to-door China ePacket tracking: The ePacket delivery provides customers the option of end-to-end tracking, without paying any additional costs. This is a huge benefit for them to be able to monitor the location of the package. The ePacket can easily be tracked on official websites such as EMS and USPS.
  • Free returns on any undeliverable items: Another benefit to the customers is the sense of security they get knowing that any undeliverable item is returned, without any additional expense. This in turn, improves the customer-merchant relationship, as the online merchants will be able to provide refunds on any packages that were not successfully delivered to customers.
  • Payment of postal customs: Any customs, duties, and/or taxes must be paid by the recipient of the shipment. As the ePacket delivery goes through regular custom clearance, customers might be required to pay any applicable taxes and duties.

Keep in mind that it’s not possible to offer free shipping on all products. If the package is under 24″ x 36″ and less than 2kg, it qualifies for ePacket shipping. Notably, this type of ePacket delivery method must be shipped from either China or Hong Kong. Thus, if certain dropshipping vendors have products shipping within the US, customers cannot benefit from ePacket shipping in that specific case.

ePacket Tracking – How to Track ePacket Delivery from China

One of the greatest perks of using China post’s ePacket shipping service is the ePacket tracking facility. It may be a bit tricky to keep track of all your parcels, especially when shipping a large amount at once. Customs, foreign postal services, and other barriers might hinder the tracking of any single item, let alone a large number. The tracking information can be very valuable to the customers so that they can know the location of their delivery. This also helps prevent any customer concerns regarding scams, if say, their package is not delivered within the given time frame.

It is important to learn how to track the ePacket. ePacket shipping also features ePacket tracking and delivery confirmation in the US Postal Service network.

The ePacket tracking codes must be obtained through your supplier. You can track ePacket shipments by using USPS , ePacket China Post, or sites like 17track.net. All KartSupply Suppliers and KartSupply Verified Suppliers offer ePacket delivery, so you’ll be able to get your products to your customers promptly. KartSupply Verified Suppliers also have an excellent track record of shipping 95% of all orders on time, so they’ll be on the road to your customers quicker.

You can find a tracking code by going to KartSupply > My Orders, and you’ll see the tracking code next to all of your fulfilled orders.

ePacket and Dropshipping

When it comes to dropshipping, most products are manufactured in China or Hong Kong. Naturally, many suppliers are also based in this part of the world.

The ePacket China post is one of the reasons why dropshipping products are relatively inexpensive to source. Many have asked themselves, “why buy a cheap product if shipping fees are high and wait times are long?”. A lot of times online shoppers are lured into products due to their affordable price, but once they’re about to checkout they are greeted with high shipping charges, or a long shipping period which might make many reconsider their purchase.

ePacket delivery drastically cuts down the shipping time for dropshipping orders. This allows your customers to get faster delivery, which maintains your business’ positive relationship with them. Increased customer satisfaction means that you have a higher chance for future orders, as well as higher profits from lower shipping costs. Due to the increased efficiency in delivery times, a customer in the U.S. might also be more willing to do business with a China or Hong Kong based supplier, which increases the likelihood of potential business.

With the undeniable benefits that ePacket shipping has for your dropshipping business, it should be one of the main considerations for you when deciding which products to dropship. Not only will you benefit by lowering the costs, but you will also be able to keep your customers happy with a reasonable delivery time. ePacket is offered as a free or inexpensive shipping option. This means that online merchants dropshipping with KartSupply Suppliers or KartSupply Verified Suppliers, will be able to offer free shipping to customers. It’s a very reliable option for both merchants and customers, as any other shipping options may not be as reliable, or way out of budget. If the majority of your customers are based locally, you will have the speed of delivery to use as an advantage. Reliable and timely delivery is a very important factor when starting a dropshipping business, which cannot be overlooked if you aim to gain the trust of your customers.

The ePacket delivery is offered by merchants as a shipping option from China on websites such as eBay, AliExpress, and KartSupply. However, the ePacket shipment is not limited to just the aforementioned. If a package that is being shipped meets the requirements for an ePacket delivery, it can also be shipped with China Post’s ePacket service. A product delivered with ePacket shipping is typically delivered within 7-30 days. The delivery method to the US is typically faster than other countries around the world. This is likely due to high order volumes from the US due to the size of their population allowing for more frequent trips. Yet, compared to standard ePacket China Post deliveries (sometimes up to 60 days), countries around the world receive their packages much faster when using ePacket shipping.

Pro Tip: Using KartSupply, you can quickly find products that have an ePacket delivery option available using an overlay filter:

People want instant gratification, so reducing shipping times will help you to make more sales. A core reason why Amazon has dominated other retailers is the ease of purchasing a product and low shipping times. Fortunately, you can still meet the needs of your customers with ePacket tracking and delivery. Thus, customers will still receive products quickly but at a fraction of the cost of an American made product.

The lower your shipping time and costs, the more likely customers are to buy from you. Your business will also have higher the margins from low business costs. Luckily, even if you have to pay for ePacket delivery, with the right product price, your business can easily absorb the cost of using ePacket China post tracking and delivery. Fortunately, most ePacket deliveries are either free or only a couple of dollars.

In addition, using ePacket tracking and delivery changes the game for ecommerce entrepreneurs who want to buy products from Chinese suppliers at a low cost, while maintaining quick shipping times for their customers.

Customs with ePacket Shipping

Customers may have to pay for customs or taxes on their products. This isn’t an ePacket shipping issue but an international shipping one. The ePacket delivery goes through regular custom clearances, which is the reason why the customers might require to pay any applicable taxes and duties. For best-selling items, you may want to contact your suppliers to find out about customs fees.

Additionally, it may also be beneficial to ask the shipping merchant if they are aware of any duties or taxes owed on arrival to the destination. They might have an idea beforehand of the regular shipping taxes/duties that may incur.

Notably, products with ePacket to Canada, or other international countries, may have slightly higher shipping fees and lengthier delivery times. Often, free ePacket shipping is only for the US. You need to look up the countries you serve manually to ensure that ePacket tracking and delivery is available internationally. Hence, if you always target the same countries, you might want to check if they have ePacket before importing them into your store. This helps to ensure that every customer who can benefits from the ePacket China post delivery option.

You now have a strong understanding of ePacket — congratulations! Now, you’re ready to incorporate this delivery option onto your ecommerce store. Doing so is likely improve customer satisfaction and boost your conversation rates. For more tips and tricks for improving your dropshipping process, feel free to have a look around our blog.

How to Use KartSupply to Find Products

We know that it can be tough to make a decision when you’re searching for products to sell online.

After all, there’s so much choice, so how can you know which products are best for your business?

We want to remove some of the guesswork that comes with finding a product, and enable you to make data-driven decisions about which products are best for your business.

That’s exactly why we’ve introduced actionable product statistics to all product listings on KartSupply.

In the sections below we’ll look at the data points that we’ve added, and explain how you can use them when you’re looking for products.

Star Ratings and Review Counts

When you search for products on KartSupply you’ll see a star rating for every listing which ranges from 0 to 5 stars.

Also, we’ve added the review count – the number of reviews which have been left for each product – next to the star rating.

This statistic will help you to gauge how reliable the current star rating is. If, for example, you see that a product has a 5 stars after 100 reviews, you can assume that it’s high quality.

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that products which have less reviews are unreliable – they could just be brand new to KartSupply.

Overall the star ratings and review counts will help you to understand how certain products resonate with your target audience – products that you might be thinking about adding to your store.

Order Count

There’s one thing that every entrepreneur has in common – they want to make sales.

That’s exactly why we’ve added order count statistics to all product listings on KartSupply.

We want you to know the exact number of orders that each product has received whenever you’re searching for new products for your store. This data will help you to gauge just how competitive a product is, and how popular it will likely be with your potential target audience.

When you click on a product listing you’ll see that there are two sets of order count data: the order count from the past 30 days, and the order count from the past 6 months.

We’ve broken down the data like this to help you understand how the product has performed historically, so you can make better decisions during your selection process.

One of the most common questions that entrepreneurs ask us is: “How can I know how competitive a product is?”

We want to be transparent with every entrepreneur who uses KartSupply, so we’ve added our imports data to our product listings.

This means that whenever you search for a product on KartSupply you’ll be able to see the exact number of KartSupply entrepreneurs who are selling each product on our platform. So, if a product listing shows 100 imports, that would mean that 100 different KartSupply stores have imported that product.

Also, our imports data will help you to better understand just how many entrepreneurs are generating the number of orders that you’ll see in our product statistics. However, it’s important to note that if a product is listed with an AliExpress supplier, the order count will also include orders from AliExpress users.

Selecting a great product is only one step on your path towards making sales.

Once you’ve chosen a product that you want to sell, you’ll need to attract potential customers to your store.

But wouldn’t it be great to see if other entrepreneurs have found success with this product in the past before you got started with your campaigns?

Enter KartSupply’s pageview data.

Pageviews show just how many times a product has been viewed on Hipkart stores.

Essentially, this data shows just how successful other KartSupply merchants have been with their own marketing efforts.

To help you find the products that you’re looking for, try filtering your results by price and shipping methods too.

Benefits of KartSupply Listed Supplier and Over AliExpress Suppliers

When it comes to picking a supplier, there are some very clear benefits to choosing a product from KartSupply Suppliers or Verified Suppliers over AliExpress suppliers. Let’s take a look at them one by one.

KartSupply Suppliers are hand-picked based on their experience as a supplier, and the service that they can provide to KartSupply sellers just like you. If any of those suppliers do not meet our expectations, we will remove their products from our platform.

The same level of trustworthiness cannot be guaranteed on AliExpress. That’s why it’s your task to choose suppliers and products to sell carefully.

Do I Have to Inform Suppliers that I Am Dropshipping?

As we’ve already mentioned, both KartSupply Suppliers are aware that you’ll be dropshipping.

This means that you won’t need to worry about any promotional material or invoices appearing in the packages which they ship to your customers. This will save you a bunch of time and effort that would have been spent contacting different suppliers to request this.

On the other hand, AliExpress suppliers don’t know that you’re dropshipping. What Should You Sell Online?

What Should You Sell Online?

I recently did a Reddit AMA on dropshipping. The most frequently asked questions were about which products to sell online. I decided to write a guide for deciding what to sell online with a specific focus on providing great dropshipping ideas. With that in mind, I want to emphasize that this post holds key tips and tricks to finding products that actually sell. To come up with these kinds of dropshipping ideas, we will be exploring how to use Google Trends products to determine just what to sell online that will generate real profits.

I have structured this article into two to parts: Generating dropshipping ideas and filtering which products to sell online. My goal is to provide a roadmap for generating great dropshipping ideas, and then, to give you the knowledge to strategically filter out the ones which aren’t worth testing. This article will be useful for all ecommerce start-ups as well as small businesses and medium-sized businesses who are looking for new dropshipping ideas, and who wish to sell products online with increased profit margins.

Why Sell Products Online with Dropshipping?

Before we delve into figuring out what to sell online, I want to offer a quick explanation of dropshipping and the benefits of opting for this business model. This way, you’ll have a clearer understanding of the unique considerations necessary for successfully finding which products to sell online.

Dropshipping is an increasingly popular form of ecommerce where merchants import products from third party suppliers and sell them in their online stores. This way, they can cut the costs and liabilities of stocking merchandise themselves. Dropshippers have the ability to decide their price markups and can run their businesses from virtually anywhere in the world.

Dropshipping also gives ecommerce entrepreneurs the freedom to stay on top of current trends because they can easily change the merchandise sold in their stores whenever they want. These are just a few of the benefits of choosing dropshipping over more traditional varieties of ecommerce. All it takes to generate some serious profits is finding the right products to sell to the right market at the right time. Now, let’s explore some of the best practices for generating winning dropshipping ideas.

What to Sell Online When Dropshipping:

Brainstorm Dropshipping Ideas

You never want to start with a blank page. Your head is already full of good dropshipping ideas: your hobbies, products you like such as Google Trends products, and newly discovered passions. Start by tapping into the wealth of information and inspiration you already have floating around in your own brain.

Write everything down that comes to mind. It doesn’t matter if you think the product will be a bestseller or not. Don’t skip this step as it provides an important foundation for completing the next ones.

Not Sure What to Sell Online? Browse Other Shops

Back in the 1980’s, Walmart’s founder, Sam Walton was arrested for crawling around stores on his hands and knees. He later told a friend he was measuring the spaces between product shelves to determine how his competitors displayed their products.

At the time, Walmart was making $400M+ in sales, but Walton knew that there was more he could earn if only he could master the approaches his competitors were using to sell their products.

When you browse other stores, look at their offerings, best selling lists, and promoted products. Many stores have a tremendous amount of data and employ entire departments to organize their sales and select their products. Use that information to your benefit. Browse a lot, and browse frequently. It’ll help you come up with great dropshipping ideas.

Here is a link list of stores and resources you should regularly review:

Add to your product list any of the dropshipping ideas posted on these sites that pique your interest.

Visit Social Shopping Sites for Additional Dropshipping Ideas

There are over 100 million products on Polyvore and 30 million on Wanelo. Add FancyPinterest, and even Instagram to the mix, and you have a very large number of products from around the world that can easily be sorted by popularity, trends, categories, and more.

People often overlook these sites in their research, but they are valuable for drawing insights about which kinds of products are making waves on the internet from one day to the next.

Therefore, I recommend setting up an account on each one of these websites. Subscribe to different categories and lists. Follow what people like the most and add those things to your list. When you’re constantly surrounding yourself with inspiration, you’ll quickly come up with dropshipping ideas that have profit generating potential.

Ask Your Friends for Dropshipping Ideas

The next time you have coffee with friends, review some Google Trends products beforehand, and ask their opinion about those items. Don’t limit yourself to your own demographics either. Talk with friends of all ages and backgrounds to get a wide variety of dropshipping ideas and a wider range of perspectives about what to sell online. You’ll likely end up with dropshipping ideas you hadn’t even considered, and these will make your ecommerce store that much better.

Look Around You for Additional Ideas About What to Sell Online

Look around your house, your workspace, and the places in your community that you frequently visit. Are there any products you can’t live without? Which products would make your life easier? Is there anything that is hard to find in the supermarket or at local shops? The answers to these questions could hold the key when your aim is to sell products online that will actually turn a profit.

Consider this: Howard Schultz came up with his coffee shop idea on a trip to Italy and later called it Starbucks. Lots of dropshipping ideas can definitely come to mind while traveling, it’s equally possible to spot them locally in everyday life. Start using your daily life as its own databank for product ideas. Stay alert and spot opportunities. Once you adopt this mindset, you will begin to see hundreds of products and dropshipping ideas each day.

When you’re being active with your ideation you’ll quickly come up with a list of the best dropshipping products for your store. So, be observant, carry a notebook, and remember to write everything down.

Sites to Avoid When Coming Up with Dropshipping Ideas

When coming up with your list of products to sell online, I suggest you don’t look at sites like SpringWise.com or TrendHunter.com. It’s not that they are inherently bad. In fact, they are great for other purposes. When it comes to generating product ideas and deciding what to sell, however, product trend sites publish ideas that are often out of reach for the average merchant because, oftentimes, too many have already jumped on the bandwagon with selling these items. In other cases, these products are simply too difficult to obtain for dropshipping purposes. They’ll provide you with good dropshipping ideas, but they might not necessarily be right for your store. For example, how would you import and promote Wearable Sleeves that Help Stroke Victims Recover or Herb Inspired Fragrances with dropshipping?

How to Successfully Sell Products Online: Next Steps

Once you’ve got your list of dropshipped products, it’s time to refine it. Next, we will be covering how to narrow down your dropshipping ideas list by filtering them under the following considerations so that it only contains the very best dropshipping products.

*Note that your dropshipping ideas list will be ongoing as you continue to draw inspiration and discover new product trends.

What to Sell Online: Filtering Google Trends Products

Anyone can import dozens of Google Trends products their stores in just a few minutes. The tricky part is knowing how to figure out what to sell online based on what will also fit with your marketing campaigns, display well on your homepage, and generally make sense within the context of your brand. These kinds of Google Trends products are called ‘Alpha Products.’ They are items that draw lots of traffic to your store. After you have determined your Alpha Products, it takes no time at all to fill in the rest of the store with cross-sell, upsell, and related products.

Use Niche Filters to Generate Dropshipping Ideas

With the rise of dropshipping, niche shops have become the trend. Niches have since turned from an ecommerce novelty to a proven, successful strategy.

It makes sense. There’s no use in fighting with the big stores for potential customers’ attention. Avoid categories that are too broad or general. The masses are already exposed to thousands of offers daily.

Instead, look to supply niche products that are underserved by the larger players. For example, there is no specific interest group for a normal belt, but you can easily tell that cycling gear will resonate well with cycling enthusiasts. Find your niche. If you can come up with niche dropshipping ideas, you’re already more likely to turn a profit when you sell products online.

The ‘Stay Away’ Categories Filter

Even if some of the products in this category may overlap with the niche filter, it’s essential to narrow down your product selection by excluding items listed in the ‘stay away’ categories.

Some product categories have grown significantly over the last decade, and there are already too many strong players and smaller shops out there supplying these items.

Just look at the ecommerce growth rates: books and the jewelry certainly aren’t making the cut. More than 80% of Americans say they’ve bought electronics or apparel online in the past three months, which means they already have their choice of trusted store.

Cross off the following general categories from your idea list: books, jewelry, electronics, and clothing. You’ll need to be more specific by finding a niche.

Please note: I don’t suggest crossing out these categories entirely. You could sell plus size women’s clothing, men’s clothing, custom hiking/cycling electronics gear, or jewelryhidden in candles. I suggest you pay more attention to finding an interesting subcategory that will make your store unique. Don’t fall into the trap of selling in general categories.

Make Use of the Price Sweet Spot Filter

There are a few general rules to remember: the lower the price, the better the conversion rate. The higher the price, the more support you’ll need to provide.

Andrew from ecommerceFuel says the perfect ecommerce product price range is from $100 to $200. Richard from ABLS argues that it’s $75 to $150. In my experience, however, my sweet spot price is $40 to $60 (at a 200% markup).

Within the $40 to $60 price range, the profits are high enough that you can still cover the marketing costs of up to $20 per sale. The conversion rate is usually higher within this price range than a pricier bracket because the purchase requires less consideration on the part of the buyer. You typically won’t have to offer as much customer support with less expensive items.

For these reasons alone, you increase the odds of the success of your store in developing markets. With Chinese dropshipping, you can sell everywhere in the world. Although you still have to keep in mind that while $30 may not be much to people living in the US, it could be a lot for someone in South America or Eastern/Central Europe.

Bonus Secret: You should definitely try selling in developing/neglected markets. Lower advertising costs and competition equals a higher ROI . Don’t worry about the language barriers.

Therefore, it’s always worthwhile to research different markets when deciding where to sell your products.

At this time, I suggest looking over your list and crossing out any dropshipping ideas that are more than $60.

Use the Marketing Channels Filter to Sell More Products Online

After you learn how to sell products online that have potential to yield a good profit, you have to think about your marketing strategy. Simply having good dropshipping ideas isn’t enough. You must have a plan for how you will sell these products as this is a crucial aspect of being successful in ecommerce.

Marketing effectively is the primary way that you will stand out from your competitors, and being familiar with the different marketing channels at your disposal is going to be invaluable to your business. To put it simply, different marketing channels are going to be most useful for different Google Trends products. Once you pick the product, you have to figure out which marketing channel will be best for it.

Advertising an $800 hoverboard on Facebook might not be the best idea, but you might succeed in advertising it on Google Adwords. A hoverboard is not a spontaneous purchase, in most cases people will Google it to learn more information about it including which stores are selling it.

I’ve spent many hours looking at how other people pick their marketing strategies and didn’t find anything that would meet my needs. I liked Rand from Moz’s tablesrepresenting the ROI, effort and cost of each marketing channel, but it seems to be outdated (published in 2009). There are also a lot of explicit guides and lists of all marketing channels, but none of them position marketing from an inventory standpoint.

So, I decided to do a product evaluation/marketing table myself. Its design is similar to the one from Moz’s blog but based on personal experience along with some thoughts and insights I’ve combed from the internet.

There are dozens of other marketing channels out there, but I doubt that PR stunts, co-branding opportunities, or video marketing will be the right options for anyone just starting their business. However, you might want to consider affiliate marketing in the future, so it’s something to keep in mind.

Remember to examine your resources (time, money, knowledge), and then select one or two marketing channels that are feasible within your circumstances. Next, cross out all dropshipping ideas that don’t suit those channels.

Google Trends Products & Keyword Tools Filters

Google Trends Products and Keyword Tools are a must if you’re going to use Google Adwords as a marketing channel or if you’re just generally trying to boost organic traffic to your site. These help you helps you to see which products are currently trending. Also, you can check the demand of your product dropshipping ideas with these tools.

Keyword Tool

Take a look at your remaining product ideas. Enter each product name and variations into the Google Keywords Analysis tool. The system will then generate data about how competitive the keywords are, which will give you some indication of how much competition you might be up against in attempting to sell those products in your store. The more competitive the keyword, the pricier it will be to use it on Google Adwords.

Select ‘Keywords Ideas,’ and look at how many searches each Low Competition Keyword receives. Especially when just starting out, it’s good to pay special attention to these keywords because they will be more budget friendly, and you’ll be up against less competition when a person searches for that product on Google.

Let’s say you could get all of that traffic and 2% of them would buy at your store. Would this demand be enough? The key is to find a sweet spot between substantial enough demand and minimal enough competition that your products will stand out from the crowd.

Google Trends Products

Go to trends.google.com and do the same exercise here. Enter each of your product ideas into the search and determine the trends of interest, based on search volume. Not only can you have a look at what is currently trending, you can also view data about the frequency of a given keyword search over time. Is the trend increasing or decreasing? Are there any patterns? Do you see any spikes? This information can be very useful in deciding whether it’s the right time to sell a given product. Google Trends can also help you to have a clearer understanding of customer behavior as you can view search data based on things like country or region.

How to Use These Tools to Decide What to Sell

In general, you should avoid product categories that have little or no search traffic (less than 500 monthly searches). If you are planning to grow organically, you should also dismiss all product ideas that have high competition according to the Google Keyword Analysis Tool. Essentially, you want to find the right balance between a search volume that’s not too competitive and but is still enough to indicate that there is demand for that product.

Determine What to Sell Online Using the Seasonality Filter

While it may be exciting to see that there is a spike in the Google Trends products search for an item you are looking to sell, exercise caution.

It could be that the product is in high demand simply because of the time of year. For instance, avoid seasonal Google Trends products like Christmas decorations. By focusing on seasonal items, you’re reducing your sales cycle. Most Christmas decoration sales take place in autumn and winter. These are likely some of the best dropshipping ideas for this time of year, but you’ll need core products in your store that will sell all year long. Take some time to think of dropshipping ideas for your store that aren’t seasonal. Do this by checking product seasonality trends on Google Trends as well.

Exercise Caution by Using the Copyrights Filter

Be careful when you’re sourcing branded products for your store. It isn’t always easy to find suppliers that sell copyrighted products. If you’re sourcing copyrighted products from little-known suppliers, there is a chance that you’ll be selling fake products. Items with logos and designs that are the same or even too similar to other brands can definitely lead to legal issues or at the very least tarnish the reputation of your business. Thus, you can never be too cautious when selecting items on these grounds. We suggest steering clear of anything resembling an existing brand and instead focus on building your own brand instead. This is more sustainable in the long run, and will result in creating a business you can be proud of.

The Competition Filter: the Final Consideration for What to Sell Online

At this point you’ve been able to refine your list based on proven strategies for doing so, and you’re now left with the last remaining dropshipping ideas. The last major filter to consider is competition. By crossing out the broad categories suggested above, you have already avoided competition against giant retailers like Amazon. Still, don’t think you’re the only one out there who has come up with the idea of selling niche products.

Evaluating your competition is an endless task, and there are many ways of going about it. One thing is for certain, though. You need to check whether the product you’re about to start advertising is already widespread among other websites.

Here’s a simple trick:

Google a product, and then try doing a product image search. Look at how many shops have similar items for sale. If you’re dropshipping, most store owners will likely have the same images. Find your competitors. Then, check their pricing strategy, popularity/traffic (on sites like Alexa.org or SpyFu.com), and which marketing channels they are using. Cross out all product ideas that already have huge competition.

How to Find Products to Sell Online: Conclusion

As an ecommerce entrepreneur, you need a clear product selection process in place  to in order to figure out which items actually have profit potential for your business. People often pick dropshipping ideas on a whim, rather than through careful consideration, which wastes a lot of time and effort. Use the filters laid out here to narrow down your list and figure out what products to sell. Take the time to properly research the best dropshipping ideas for your ecommerce store, and test them out.
